Datsun 240Z bolt kit

The Datsun 240Z, sold in Japan as the Nissan Fairlady Z and built under chassis codes such as HS30 and HLS30, is the car that started the S30 range. Restoring one means pulling hundreds of bolts that are rusted, rounded or missing. This kit replaces them with new JIS hardware, sorted into labelled bags so you can find the right one when it goes back together.

S30 Big Bolt Kit: A$1,200
About 240 labelled bags and more than 2,600 pieces, sorted by section. Small Bolt Kits cover one section at a time.

Use it for a full nut and bolt restoration or a concours rebuild: replacement bolts, nuts, washers and screws in the right sizes, strength marks and zinc finishes.

What is in the 240Z bolt kit

The kit is sorted into the same sections you work through on the car. Most sections are also sold on their own as Small Bolt Kits.

Not yet complete: the transmission and its associated fasteners are not included. Interior coverage is limited to the fasteners beneath the dashboard; a small number of additional interior fasteners are supplied as complimentary extras. Certain key suspension bolts without a marked strength grade, mainly in the front suspension, are also not included.

Built for the S30

The 240Z is the first of the S30 Z cars, and the 260Z and 280Z that followed share most of its body and chassis hardware. The kit covers the engine bay, body, engine, suspension and steering, and underbody, with every bag numbered so the parts lookup can tell you which bag a fastener lives in.

Correct hardware for a 240Z

A 240Z was built with JIS fasteners: metric threads with smaller heads than the metric bolts sold today. The kit uses the correct head sizes, 4 and 7 mark bolts where the factory used them, and finishes to match. More on that in JIS vs metric bolts.

Check the fit

The kit list was built from one measured car: a 1977 Datsun 260Z 2+2 (chassis GRS30), right-hand drive, delivered new in Australia. Other models, years and markets can differ in places, so check the parts lookup against your car. If something on your car does not match, tell me, and the list gets better for everyone.

Early and late 240Zs changed in places over the production run, so the lookup is the place to check specific parts.

Questions

Will the S30 kit fit a 240Z?

Most of the hardware is shared across the S30 range, so the bulk of the kit suits a 240Z. The list was measured on a 260Z, and there are differences between models and years, so check the parts lookup for the areas you are working on.

Are the bolts JIS or metric?

JIS. The thread is metric, but the heads are the smaller JIS sizes the car was built with, such as a 12 mm head on an M8 bolt.

Can I buy just one section?

Yes. Small Bolt Kits cover one section each, such as the engine bay, body or suspension and steering.
